This page was written in response to the page I have about birding and visiting St. Paul Island, Alaska. If you have visited St. George and would like to add some addition comments which would be helpful to future travelers, I will eventually add them. -Kimsey Fowler, Jr.
From Bill Arnold, 16 Nov 2000:
"St. George is far more scenic than St. Paul. I know, I have been to both Islands. Well worth the extra expense."
From: Andrew Malavansky, 5 Jan 2002
Hats off to you for your web page! I am a resident of St. George Island Alaska and was offended by your comment that St. George was "probably not worth the trip".
St. George boasts a completely renovated 10 room Hotel with modern amenities..i.e..Dish network television, telephones in each room and no noisy tavern next door or anywhere. St. George's towering cliffs rival those of St. Paul for their spectacular beauty and population of marine birds.
As of last year Reeve Aleutian Air went bankrupt and the only passenger carrier is Peninsula Air which services both Islands: St. Paul on a near daily basis and St. George 3 times a week. Beginning June 2002 they will be making more trips to St. George because of increased demand due to Reeves untimely demise. Aircraft navigational aids at St. George's 5000 foot gravel runway have been installed and are functional. More improvements are to be finished by the autumn. Plans are underway for the expansion and pavement of the runway, aircraft delays due to persistent fog are nearly a thing of the past. St. George Tanaq Corporation owns and maintains the hotel; they too have a website with contact info.
I enjoyed visiting your website and it's contribution to tourism, but please update it and delete the negative comment on St. George. I hope that some day you will visit St. George and enjoy it's beauty and hospitality. Eventually an updated website will be in place promoting St. George and all amenities.
